Best time to visit
Tanzania and Ngorongoro are year-round wildlife destinations - so it is always the best time to visit. The weather is mostly cool and dry from late June to September. October and November are very pleasant, with fewer crowds and a landscape that slowly greens up as the short rains begin in many areas. From late December until February, temperatures are high, but not oppressive. Game viewing in the Ngorongoro crater is always great and an awesome experience. Although there is a clear distinction between wet and dry season, it doesn’t adversely affect game viewing. The wildebeest migration can be seen in the months of December to April, with calving January and February. For birders, the months of November to March are best for Palearctic migrants. Botanists will enjoy the wet season from March to June the most, which is also the time of the fewest visitors.
What to do in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area?
Ngorongoro offers a wide variety of memorable activities throughout the year. Activities in the Ngorongoro Crater itself are limited to game driving only. There are also picnic spots in Ngorongoro. Guided walking safaris during the day through untouched areas, camping safaris, spectacular game viewing for predators, herbivores and omnivores and bird watching are all essential. Cultural tourism experiences are available among Maasai and Hadzabe tribes, as well as visits to archaeological findings at Oldupai Gorge. These guided walks in the conservation area need to be booked in advance. Forest walks along Endoro Nature Trail in the highland forest, near Gibbs Farms & Endoro Lodge, are additional natural highlights.
In reality there just are not enough days to get by Ngorongoro. The more you stay in Ngorongoro the more you feel like staying. Three (3) days should be ample in our opinion to see most of what Ngorongoro has to offer.
RAINY SEASON (NOVEMBER TO APRIL)
The short rains are from November to December and the long rains from February to April, the latter generally being considered the off season. However, the rainy season is a very exciting time of year as this is when animals congregate on the short grass plains to have their young. Late February, early March is usually a good time to see the migration on the plains. In turn, this attracts large number of predators and results in spectacular interactions between predators and prey. Keep in mind that part of the Serengeti Plains fall within the NCA.
DRY SEASON (MAY TO OCTOBER)
The dry season holds its own beauty. In Africa the dry season is the best time for game viewing because the animals are concentrated along permanent water sources. Within the Crater game viewing is excellent during this time. However, keep in mind that the Short Grass Plains become completely devoid of game during this season. This is the best time of the year to visit Empakaai and Ndutu, which has resident game that remains around the lake all year round.
